Varnishing Day

Backbone 02 - On the wall at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024

This week we were proud to take part in Varnishing Day at The Royal Academy.

Originally the day when artists would put the finishing touches to their works within the galleries, it is now a day of celebration where artists get to see their work for the first time on the walls of the Royal Academy.

We started the day by walking from Victoria Station, past the front of Buckingham Palace, through Green Park, past the Ritz and in to the court yard at the RA. We were greeted by a steel band and a crowd of other artists, there was a carnival atmosphere. At 11:15 we began parading to St James’s Piccadilly for a service, the church was packed and an hour later we were heading back towards the Summer Exhibition.

We walked back through the courtyard, up the main stairs and in to the galleries, there was excitement and anticipation abound. This is the first time we have been exhibited at the Summer Exhibition and we both found it quite exciting wandering around looking for our work. We walked through the architectural room and we spotted Backbone 02 in the distance. We were really happy with its position, high enough to be seen across the room but not so high it can’t be inspected.

Overall it was a wonderful experience, we’re looking forward to visiting again with family and friends over the next 2 months.

Backbone 02 will be on display until 18th August 2024. The framed original has been sold but we have an edition of 25 prints for sale. Editions can be purchased directly from the Royal Academy here: Buy Backbone 02 (Edition of 25)
