Bridges to Nowhere
I've had a long affection/fascination with service stations, these weird and intriguing in-between spaces. It was with great joy that Amy bought me “Bridges to Nowhere” by John Grindrod this Christmas, he certainly writes much better than I do and expresses some of how these spaces make me feel.
This Christmas / New Year we've driven about 600 miles what with family spread out over the south east and east of England and visited many service stations. These images were shot at Fleet Services on the M3, when we arrived we were all very tired and it was snowing. We had been stuck on a road closure on the A31 and the stop was most welcome.
We went over the bridge, though it wasn't to nowhere it was to the nicer newly built Fleet south bound, (it was rebuilt after a fire). It was actually quite a nice experience and gave me Centre Parcs vibes.
I believe copies of Bridges to Nowhere are still available and are excellently punctuated by illustrations by Richard de Pesando
